Centenary Book of the Church of Ireland Training College

EXTRACTS
FROM REPORTS OF THE CHIEFS OF INSPECTION OF THE COMMISSIONERS OF NATIONAL EDUCATION, IRELAND

1902

"Criticism Lessons continued to be given on the very efficient system that has obtained in this College."

"The Principal and the Professors attended during the Annual Inspection; the test Lessons were on the whole satisfactory, showing perhaps more than average thought.

"A. PURSER: E. DOWNING."

Appendix to 69th Report, pp. 6 and 7.

1903

"There was no material change in the Staff or in the methods of training, which compares favourably with that of any other Training College in the Kingdom. The Criticism Lessons are particularly well conducted, and the summing up by the Professors and the Principal are always very valuable.

"A. PURSER."

Appendix to 70th Report, pp. 12, 13.

1905-6

"The Test Lessons in teaching showed merit. The College Criticism Lessons, presided over by the Reverend Principal, are very valuable, and the records of them afforded us useful information.

"A. PURSER: J. J. HYNES."

Appendix to 72nd Report, p. II.

"The Students showed considerable merit in teaching lessons before us, and the Inspectors who assisted us. This is the more meritorious as so large a proportion were mere pupils and had no previous experience of teaching. The improvement effected in the second year of training is very noticeable.

"A. PURSER: J. J. HYNES."

Appendix to 73rd Report, p. II.

1907-8

"The Students acquitted themselves satisfactorily. A good style of exposition and questioning is cultivated, and the prepared lessons afforded evidence of much care and thought.

"A. PURSER: J. J. HYNES."

Appendix to 74th Report, p. II.

1908-9

"The Annual Inspection of the College was held in June, and the result was, as usual, satisfactory. The lessons were well prepared and in general well taught.

"A. PURSER: J. J. HYNES."

Appendix to 75th Report of Commissioners of National Education, p. II.

EXTRACTS
FROM REPORTS OF THE INSPECTOR OF CHURCH TRAINING COLLEGES
TO THE ARCHBISHOPS OF CANTERBURY YORK

THE REV. BERNARD REYNOLDS, M.A., Prebendary of St. Paul's Cathedral.

1905

"Dublin. -- It was a great pleasure to visit this excellent College, from which we in England have much to learn; everything is, of course, quite different from what it is in England, and the Inspector felt rather that he was the inspected. It is to be hoped he profited by the experience."

The Archbishop of Canterbury's message to that College has been much welcomed.

1909

"Dublin is quite amongst the excellent Colleges. It stands most decidedly in the Colleges which I put first. I have not the slightest hesitation in stating this. It gave me the greatest pleasure to visit you, and the reality of the work and the high aim and tone were most marked."

"It is abundantly evident that the College is doing spiritual and helpful work of an effective and excellent character."
