BELFAST WOMAN'S FATE

TRAGEDY ON ORMEAU ROAD.

KILLED WHILE CROSSING.

Ormeau Road, Belfast, was, on Monday afternoon, the scene of tragic accident resulting in Mrs. Margaret Harden, aged 70, being instantaneously killed.

She resided with her nephew, tram driver, at 328 Ormeau Road. Shortly before six o'clock she left the house and proceeded to cross the road. She had just go to the centre of it when an out-bound lorry approached.

On seeing the vehicle, it is stated, she turned to go back and the lorry swerved to avoid her, when she was knocked down. As a result of the violent fall her head was badly injured.

Constable Ryan, of Ballynafeigh Barracks, who was on patrol duty, at once ran to the ill-fated woman's assistance, but when she was picked up she was dead. The remains were removed to the mortuary of the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Clippings

"UNFAIR TO NURSE HAYES."

SAYS LIMAVADY GUARDIAN.

At a meeting of the Limavady Board of Guardians, Senator J. A. Long. D.L. (chairman), presiding, a letter was submitted from the Ministry of Home Affairs relative to the appointment of Miss Johann Hayes as midwife of the Ballykelly dispensary district. The Ministry informed the Guardians that Nurse Hayes previously held the position of midwife of Kilmood dispensary district, in the Newtownards Union, and was asked to resign the position, in consequence of a statement made by her of unfair treatment by the medical officer of the dispensary. A sworn inquiry was held, and the statement was ascertained to be unfounded, and the Ministry had informed the Board concerned that they saw no reason to disagree with their action. Nurse Hayes had omitted to make any reference to these facts in the query form, and, in the circumstances, the Ministry was unable to approve of her appointment in Ballykelly, and the vacancy should be re- advertised.

A letter was read from Nurse Hayes, who said she was surprised at the refusal of the Ministry to sanction her appointment at Ballykelly. The friction between her and the medical officer at Killymood, she said, related to private practice.

Mr. M. Smyth said he thought it was unfair of the Ministry to prevent Nurse Hayes from obtaining further employment. There was nothing against the nurse's character, and she was quite fit to do the work.

Mr. F. M'Elroy suggested that they should ask the Ministry to reconsider the matter was adopted.
