PULLED DOWN KETTLE IN FALL ON FENDER.
DUNDALK BOY'S FATAL SCALDS.
Mr. J. H. Murphy, coroner for North Louth, held an inquest at Louth Infirmary, Dundalk, on Monday evening, touching the death of Michael Kearney, aged six years, who died at the institution on Monday from injuries received at his home in Parnell Park, Dundalk, on the previous Thursday, when a kettle containing boiling water fell on him.
Inspector Lambert represented the Civic Guard.
Joseph Kearney, father of the boy, stated that until Thursday last he was in good health. When witness got back to his home at four o'clock on Thursday his wife, Christiana, told him the boy had met with an accident about 2-50. She told witness that Michael and his brother Hugh, aged 8, were in the kitchen together, and that the deceased fell on the fender and pulled down the kettle as he was falling. The kettle contained boiling water, and the body was burned over the face. She also told him that the boy was removed to the Louth Hospital immediately. There was no one in the kitchen at the time except the two boys and their mother. She was getting ready the dinner for the other children coming from school at the time. The fireplace was an open one -- there was no guard around it, only the fender.
The Coroner -- You should get a fire-guard as soon as possible.
The witness said his wife, who was in delicate health, had to leave the house at present owing to the accident.
Mary Morton, Parnell Park, wife of William Morton, carriage fitter, also gave evidence. She said that she lived next door to Kearneys. On the previous Thursday she heard of the accident about 3 p.m. The mother of the deceased carried the boy in her arms into witness's house. The boy was all burned about the head, face, and shoulders. Witness applied olive oil to the burns, and the boy was later taken to hospital.
To the Inspector -- Witness went into Kearney's half an hour afterwards and saw the kettle on the fender and the water spilled over the floor.
Dr. J. J. Clarke, surgeon of the Louth Infirmary, stated that Michael Kearney was admitted to hospital at 3-35 p.m. on May 4. He was suffering from scalds on the left side of a the head, forehead, neck, chest, and portions of the arms and legs. His death, which took place on Monday, was due to shock following the above injuries.
The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony.
