EIRE NEWSPAPER MAN'S DEATH

Literary editor of 'Press'

The death took place suddenly on Friday at Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal, where he was on holiday, of Mr. M. J. M'Manus, literary editor of the "Irish Press," Dublin.

A well-known book collector, he was himself the author of several books, including a biography of Mr. De Valera.

Aged about 60, and a native of Carrick-on-Shannon. Mr. M'Manus had been in charge of the literary side of the "Irish Press" since it was established in 1931, being a leader writer for many years.

He was a keen musician and golfer.

Mr. M'Manus is survived by his wife and daughter.

BELFAST VICTIMS OF RAZOR WOUNDS

On Friday afternoon police were called to 23 Mountview Street, Belfast, where they found Mr. John Martin, aged about 71 and his wife Lily suffering from throat wounds believed to have been caused by a razor.

The couple were taken to the Royal Victoria, where their condition to-day was stated to be "slightly improved."

Police took statements and are investlgating the incident.

It is believed that Mr. and. Mrs. Martin recently returned from a holiday in London.

M'Cleery--Armstrong

The wedding took place in Trinity Presbyterian Church, Bangor, to-day of Mr. Samuel Derek M'Cleery and Miss Iris Margretta Armstrong, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Armstrong, Gray's Hill, Bangor. The bridegroom is son of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. M'Cleery, Mount Merrion Park, Belfast.

Rev. J. T. Carson. B.A., officiated, assisted by Rey. B. W. V. Hastie. B.A.

Miss Armstrong wore a gown of Chantilly lace and net, with tiara of diamente and seed pearls, and her bouquet was of red roses.

Miss Elizabeth M'Cullough and Miss Joan M'Giffen, bridesmaids, were in frocks of silver grey net over lavender taffeta. Their headdresses and bouquets were of pink carnations. Little Miss Brenda Joan Armstrong, trainbearer, was in white.

Mr. Raymond Allen was his cousin's best man and Mr. David Fleck was groomsman.

The honeymoon will be spent in London.

Guests were entertained at the Tonic Restaurant, Bangor.

The catering arrangements were entrusted to Lightbody's Restaurant, Bangor.

COLERAINE MEN FOR TRIAL

William James Fleming (31), a labourer, of 13 Dunlop Street, Coleraine, was charged at a special court to-day with the larceny of a six-volt storage battery, valued £16, the property of W. G. Anderson & Co., Church Street. Coleraine.

Wm. Esdale Croscadden, a 22-year-old dealer, of Laurel Hill and Joseph Fleming aged 19, of 30 Dunlop Street, were charged with receiving the battery.

Accused were returned for trial at Coleraine Quarter Sessions, bail of £25 with two sureties of £20 each being allowed.

FIRE STATION WILL BE IN FOWL MARKET

Banbridge Protest Fails

The Northern Ireland Fire Authority decided, at a meeting in Lisburn on Friday to go ahead with the erection of a fire station in Banbridge on the site acquired by a Vesting Order.

The site is in the fowl market and six members of the Banbridge Council had said they would resign as a protest.

A deputation from the Council attended the meeting to urge the Authority to use an alternative site "in the interests of Banbridge."

Major D.J. Christie, chairman of the Authority, said that every consideration had been given to the Council.A deputation from the Authority had met the Counciland there had been a lot of correspondence.

He pointed out that the Council had originally agreed to the site but Mr. W. M'Cormick, J.P., a member of the deputation, said that a decision had been reached on a casting vote.
