A WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH.
ON Tuesday a sad affair occurred to a woman nearly ninety years of age, named Sarah M'Collogh, of Drumallan, who lived with her son and daughter. It appears that both left their mother in the house alone, the son going to Littlebridge mill, which is quite convenient, to get some meal made, and the daughter going to the moss to procure some turf. On returning they were terribly horrified on finding the old woman had fallen into the fire and been burned to death. Dr. M'Ivor. district coroner, has been communicated with, and an inquest will be held.

EXTRAORDINARY AFFAIR AT SKIBBEREEN
SKIBBEREEN, WEDNESDAY. -- An extraordinary affair occurred here yesterday, which caused no small amount of sensation. While Mrs M'Carthy, wife of a Mr. Florence M'Carthy, was sitting inside the counter of her shop in Hen[?] Street, where her husband carries on the hardware and spirit trade, a rifle bullet came in through the window, penetrating a showcard belonging to the Cork Distilleries Company, tore Mrs. M'Carthy's dress in the front, grazing her breast, and inflicting a slight superficial wound, and finding its way out through the clothes at the other side. Word was immediately sent to the police barrack, when District-Inspector Shiel and Head-Constable Dwyer were immediately on the scene, and after a minute search discovered the bullet, which they pronounce to be that of a rifle. They then proceeded to investigate the matter, and concluded from the way the bullet entered, if it came in a straight line, it must have been fired from about the windmill over the spire of the town clock on the square. The bullet however on examination made it quite manifest that it struck some hard substance, and ricochetted before going through the window. The conclusion generally arrived at is that the bullet must have been carelessly fired off by some person, perhaps a mile away, and never intended to find its way where it did. The police are investigating the matter, and have the bullet and the showcard in their possession. Mrs. M'Carthy is suffering from shock to the system.
