FATALITY NEAR MAGHERAFELT.
A BOY SHOT DEAD.
A SAD shooting fatality occurred on 25th ult. at Luney, a distance of about a mile from Magherafelt, whereby a boy named Arthur Hutchinson, about fourteen years of age, was shot dead. It appears that the deceased and a young man named Kearney were loading a gun in the stable at Hutchinson's house. The deceased put in the powder and shot at the muzzle, and Kearney, being in a hurry, put on the cap at the same time, when suddenly the trigger snapped, and the gun was discharged full in Hutchison's face, instantly killing him. Kearney was afterwards put under arrest by District-Inspector Reilly, and lodged in the police barracks at Magherafelt, pending the inquest which will be held, as the coroner has been communicated with.

SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A CHILD IN LURGAN.
LURGAN, DEC. 26. -- Yesterday the constabulary at Union Street Barracks received information to the effect that a woman named Mrs. Anne Mulholland, who resides in Rogers' Court, Lurgan, had, on the previous night, given birth to a male child in her own house, and that the infant had either been still-born or had died since its birth. As the latter point was involved in considerable doubt, and as there was no one in the house when the birth took place except Mrs. Mulholland, and for other reasons which need not be particularly stated, the police deemed it their duty to report the circumstances to Mr. W. H. Atkinson, coroner for North Armagh, who came to the conclusion that it would be desirable to hold an inquest on the body. This morning the inquest was held on the premises of Mr. Magee, Union Street, before Mr. Atkinson and a jury. The coroner gave instructions that a post-mortem examination of the body should be made by Dr. Magennis, J.P., who was called in to attend Mrs. Mulholland after the infants birth. At the inquest today the doctor deposed that, as the result of the post-mortem examination of the body, he had ascertained that the child had been still-born. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. Head-Constable M'Greene was in attendance on behalf of the Crown.

DREADFUL MURDER NEAR WARRENPOINT.
NEWRY, WEDNESDAY NIGHT. -- News has just reached here to-night that an old woman named Margaret Mooney was brutally murdered in the townland of Tamnaharry, about three miles from Warrenpoint, this morning. It appears that information of the murder reached the police of Warrenpoint this evening, and Sergeant Atwell and Constable Gilmartin at once proceeded to the place, where they found the body of Margaret Mooney lying on a rude bed in a small room off the kitchen. The body was not dressed, and was covered with blood, and all around there was evidence that a desperate struggle had taken place. The only occupants of the miserable house were the deceased woman and her husband, Patrick Mooney, who was then arrested by Sergt. Flinn, of Mayo Bridge Police Station, who had also arrived at the scene of the murder, and he handed the prisoner over to Sergeant Atwell and Constable Gilmartin. He was then handcuffed and conveyed on a car to Warrenpoint Police Barrack, where he remains pending the coroner's inquest and magisterial investigation. The house where the murdered woman was found was in a miserable condition. There were no traces of food about the dwelling, and altogether the wretched hovel bore traces of poverty and want. The accused is a desperate-looking man, of between sixty and seventy years of age. He declines to speak of the occurrence. No trace of a weapon could be had.

A KERRY MURDERER SENTENCED.
NENAGH, JAN. 2 -- At the Munster assizes at Nenagh to-day, before Mr. Justice O'Brien and a special jury, the trial was brought to a close, after four days' hearing, of Bartholomew Sullivan, a farmer, charged with the murder of a young man named Patrick Flahery, at Ballyhague, Co. Kerry, on the 30th August last. The prosecution suggested as the motive for the crime that Flahery intended to cut the crops on an evicted farm, but Sullivan was charged only with complicity, the actual murderer, who is known, having escaped to America, where a diligent search is still being made for him with a view to obtaining his extradition. To-day the jury after two hours' deliberation found Sullivan guilty, and the announcement caused a profound sensation in court. The prisoner, in reply to the customary question as to whether he had anything to say why sentence of death should not be pronounced upon him, said, "I am not a bit in dread of the highest judge, my lord. The next judge won't condemn me for it." His Lordship then sentenced the prisoner to be hanged in the Kerry County Jail, Tralee, on Monday, 2nd February.

It consisted in some ruffianly person or persons laying a pair of large stones on the rails, with the obvious intention of throwing the train off the line at a part where, if the plot had succeeded, there could be no question of a serious loss of life. As the train leaving Dungarvan at 4-50 last evening had gone down the incline at a place called Killadangan, about one and three-quarter miles from Dungarvan station, the train going at its greatest speed (between thirty and forty miles an hour) at the time, a severe shock was felt by the passengers, driver, and guard, and most providentially the train proceded without any accident having happened. It was then found that two large stones had been placed one on each rail, and each stone being of about two stone weight. The plot was arranged most coolly. The previous train to Dungarvan had passed just one hour before, and nothing was discovered on the line. It is strongly suspected that the ruffianly act must have been committed as dark was setting in, soon before the 4-50 p.m. train left Dungarvan. The stones were placed about fifteen yards on the near side of a metal bridge across the River Colligon, the first bridge the train crosses after leaving Dungarvan, and had the train left the rails it would inevitably have fallen into the river, about 20ft. deep, and there could scarcely be any possibility of the whole train not becoming a total wreck. At this point the train attains its greatest speed. It is at the lowest dip of the incline after leaving the station, and it is the most destructive spot, perhaps, in the whole neighbourhood to accomplish the hellish intention of the scoundrel who perpetrated the outrage. The guards in front of the engine-wheels saved the train. About twelve months ago a similar outrage was committed on the same line at Ballyvoile, but no accident occurred. Ballyvoile is about five miles from Dungarvan, and after the outrage the place was paraded by police night and day.

DYNAMITE EXPLOSION AT DONAGHADEE.
THREE MEN INJURED
A MELANCHOLY accident through the explosion of dynamite occurred on Tuesday, 30th ult., about eight o'clock, in Donaghadee, by which three men were seriously injured, one of them so severely that he is not considered out of danger. It appears that four men named William Reid. Francis Nelson, John Stevenson, and Andrew M'Kee had been engaged for several days in the sinking of a well at the rere of Mrs. Houston's premises, Shore Street, nearly opposite the Baths. Stevenson and M'Kee belong to Belfast, and the others to Donaghadee. It appears from what we have been informed that the men were inexperienced in the use of explosives of the nature of dynamite. The well had been sunk about twelve feet, and to carry the operations farther through the rock a hole had been drilled in the rock, and a charge of dynamite inserted. Means were taken to effect an explosion, but without success, and the charge was allowed to remain in the rock for two or three days, when it was determined to take it out, as after repeated attempts it would not explode. With this object the dynamite charge was attacked with a "jumper," when it exploded with terrifie effect, dashing men and splinters of rock out of the hole which had been dug, as we have said, twelve feet to the surface. Stevenson was falling in again when a man named Robert Magill, who was on the surface, caught him. He is the most seriously hurt, having lost one eye besides numerous contusions. M'Kee and Nelson were also severely wounded on various parts of the bodies, It was thought advisable by Dr. Nesbitt that Stevenson and M'Kee should be removed to hospital in Belfast for treatment, and Nelson was taken home to his residence in Mount Street, Donaghadee. Mr. Robert M'Conkey rendered valuable assistance after the accident.
