DROWNING ACCIDENTS AT LISBURN.

LISBURN, MONDAY. -- An inquest was held to-day, at two o'clock p.m., by Dr. Mussen, on the licensed premises of Mr. Johnston, Bow Street, touching the death of the man M'Ilroy, who was drowned in the town reservoir, and discovered on yesterday morning. Martha M'Ilroy, wife of the deceased, was called. On being sworn, she deposed that her husband had been drinking for a week. He was engaged as a spinner in Messrs. Stewart's mill. Since Sunday last he had been labouring delusions, and said that he was under the impression that some persons were chasing him, with the intention of killing him. On Wednesday morning he rose up out of bed and expressed himself wildly. Some time afterwards he shook hands with herself and his father, and bade them farewell. That was the last time she observed him alive. Charles M'Ilroy, father of the deceased, deposed that at about 5.30 on Wednesday morning he met his son coming down Chapel hill. He was almost naked, and had a pair of tongs in his hand. Witness asked him where he was going, and deceased replied. "They are chasing me." Deceased ran to the barracks, and witness followed him. The constable on guard told him to take his son home. Witness thought deceased would have been better where he was for a short time, until he would have got his clothes on at least. Deceased's wife came for witness about 10-30, when he was at his work. He accompanied him home, and while there he tried to induce his son into the house, at the request of his daughter-in-law, to get something to eat, but he refused, and ran off in the direction of the Antrim Road. He did not see him alive afterwards. After further evidence, a verdict was found that deceased met his death by drowning while labouring under temporary insanity.

A young man named O'Neill, who resided in Thompson's Court, Lisburn, has been missing from his home since Wednesday last, and no information as to his whereabouts could be ascertained until yesterday morning, when his father, who was walking in the vicinity of the reservoir which supplies the town with water, and is situated at Magheraleave, picked up a cap which he believed to be that of his son. He apprised the constabulary in the Railway Street Barrack of the find and immediately Sergeants Stephens and Price, along with Constable Wm. Smith, accompanied the father to the dam. On making a search they observed the body in the bottom of the water and very soon it was recovered and taken to the late residence of deceased, where it as present lies awaiting an inquest .

THE MURDEROUS ATTACK IN A TRAIN.

CASTLEREA, THURSDAY. -- Daniel Gavan, the man arrested for the murderous attack on his fellow passengers in a railway carriage at Castlerea on Tuesday, was to-day committed for trial at the spring assizes at Tullamore on a charge of attempted murder. The prisoner has not shown the least sign of insanity since his arrest, and when asked if he had statement to make replied. "No, I stabbed them deliberately." Inquiries made by the police show that Gavan has suffered two terms of imprisonment for stabbing, one of them for four years for fatally stabbing a sailor at Liverpool.
