About the transcriptions
The transcriptions published here are related to interments in Movilla Cemetery in Newtownards, Co Down. They are the result of years of research by Drew Melville and Cathy George and a little help from me.
They will be presented in two parts -- those in the Old Ground and those in the New Ground. They will be further organised according to section and each table can be sorted by column.
No transcriptions for interments dated after 1960 wil be published here.
About the cemetery
Movilla Cemetery, is located on the Movilla Road in Newtownards, Co Down. Its origins lie in Movilla Abbey, whose ruins still stand today.
The Abbey was a monastery founded by St. Finian and built around the 6th-century. Its name derives from the Irish Magh-bile, meaning "the plain of the sacred tree" or "plain of the ancient tree," originally a pre-Christian site.
